Shuffling off from Buffalo

Entering Lake Erie Tuesday July 8, 2025 We had tied up at the North Tonawanda Free Wall the previous night. Got an early start but had to wait 45 minutes to enter the Black Rock Lock that runs on a fixed schedule. Lake was smooth and our destination was Westfield Town Dock. Then, the wind picked up. The Beach House began proving to old adage about a boat handling much rougher seas than the crew. We had the west wind on the bow. White capped waves were 2.5 feet with close spaced swells. We rode these for two hours and then changed destinations. Behind the breakwaters at Dunkirk the wind was still strong, and it took three passes before Dolly was able to put a stern line on a post at the town dock. Today we cast off at 5:30 AM. It’s been much smoother and we did 39 nautical into Misery Anchorage at Erie PA. Arriving before noon.

Great Adventure: 9:25 a.m.

We reached our anchorage yesterday afternoon at about 3:30 p.m. We are planning on a ‘rest’ day again and will stay here a second night before heading north again. We had a horde of flies all day yesterday. They liked to come into the pilot house because it was calm in there. It was calm until Karl insisted I bring the battery powered vacuum up and he sucked them all in. That took care of them for a few minutes and we decided to close the doors and roll down the window flaps, not zipping them so we would have a supply of cooler air. That slowed them down to a better rate of entry. They are still pretty active today, but we have the screen door latched so they can’t get in the cabin and bite us. The sunset last night was a gorgeous display. The tidal current and the wind were arguing about which direction the boat should be facing, the tide won until after bed time.
